People are good and small acts of kindness
I see this every day. Small acts of kindness on the walk to school, overheard in a shop, witnessed at bed side when I worked at the hospice. Research proves that even just witnessing someone doing something kind generates happy hormones that feel as good as if we had experienced the kindness ourselves. Small acts of kindness become contagious. They grow, ripple and create waves of love. Never underestimate the effect a few kind words or a small gesture of love can have.
I'm reminded of my dear friend Sue who visited the doctors recently and noticed another Mum looking completely frazzled. Her son was running around and accidentally knocked something over. She was apologetic and embarrassed and remained calm and kind with him as she tried to contain his too-big-for-the-room energy. Sue felt the Mother's distress as people looked on, perhaps judging her son's behaviour and her parenting of him. Before Sue left she tapped the Mum on the shoulder and said ''I just want you to know you're doing a brilliant job as his Mum''. They were both teary when she replied ''thank you, I really needed to hear that today''.
Small acts of kindness, the gentle noticing that someone is struggling and leaning in to connect. No judgement. No fixing. Just kind connection. Science has proven that kindness is contagious. Let's go make and catch some x |
